How to reduce post-operative swelling after a rhinoplasty ?

22.05.2025

Swelling is a totally normal part of recovery after rhinoplasty, but apart from the surgeons technique and experience, there are definitely ways for patients to reduce swelling and help speed the recovery.

Here’s a list of the best ways to reduce swelling after rhinoplasty—especially in the first few weeks:

  1. Cold Compresses (First 48 Hours)
  • Best is to use cold gauzes soaked by cold saline from the fridge
  • Apply this on your cheeks, not directly on the nose, for 10–15 minutes at a time.
  • This helps reduce inflammation and discomfort early on.

  1. Sleep with Your Head Elevated
  • Keep your head elevated with 2–3 pillows or use a wedge pillow.
  • Do this for at least 1–2 weeks after surgery.
  • Lying flat can increase blood flow to your face and worsen swelling.

  1. Stay Hydrated
  • Drink plenty of water—it helps flush out toxins and supports your body’s healing process.
  • Avoid salty foods which can cause your body to retain water and increase swelling.

  1. Gentle Movement
  • Light walking can promote circulation and reduce fluid buildup.
  • Avoid anything strenuous for a few weeks, but don’t just lie around all day.

  1. Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods
  • Think: pineapple (contains bromelain), leafy greens, berries, turmeric, ginger.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and overly processed foods during early healing.

  1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Medications
  • Some may recommend arnica montana or bromelain supplements (natural anti-inflammatories).
  • Only take meds or supplements approved by your surgeon.

  1. Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure
  • Heat can cause blood vessels to expand and worsen swelling.
  • Always wear sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight, especially for the first few months.

  1. Don’t Blow Your Nose or Bend Over
  • Both actions increase pressure in the face and can worsen swelling or even affect your results.
  1. Be Patient
  • Final swelling—especially on the tip—can take months to fully resolve, even up to a year for some.
  • It’s normal for your nose to change subtly as it continues to heal.
